The Alcatraz Sailing Club was founded in 1967 by a small group of students at SF State University so that they could get more time sailing on the bay. Initially they just rented sailboats but eventually they were able to purchase a club boat. As the membership grew more and more members had their own boats and the club decided to invest solely in small sailboats to be used for instruction.
Now, more than 30 years later, the club has 400 members most of whom own or share ownership of a sailboat and they all appreciate the goal of the club to provide opportunities for sailing by all members who don't own boats.
